Latisse® is a prescription treatment program for hypotrichosis of the eyelashes. Hypotrichosis is defined as inadequate or not enough hair, and its effects are frequently experienced in the eyelashes as individuals grow older.

Ongoing use of Latisse works to overcome these processes by promoting the growth of longer, fuller, and darker eyelashes.

Am I a Candidate For Latisse?

latisse_logo2An effective Latisse treatment program results in longer, fuller, darker eyelashes. These benefits are most noticeable in individuals who have experienced recent eyelash thinning, which typically occurs with age. Latisse is available only by prescription, so if you’ve noticed your eyelashes becoming increasingly thin, consider discussing this option.

The key is to become as informed as possible regarding the expected outcomes of this treatment. If these expectations meet your personal health and body image goals, then Latisse may be a good option.

There are no conditions that would restrict an individual from using Latisse, but patients should carefully consult with their healthcare providers if any of the following are present:

  • History of eye problems
  • History or current problems with intraocular pressure
  • Currently taking drugs or other treatment for intraocular pressure

How Latisse Works

Latisse is a low-dose treatment of bimatoprost ophthalmic solution, and it works to restore and promote the growth of longer, fuller, and darker eyelashes. This approach is especially effective for patients experiencing hypotrichosis of the eyelashes. After meeting with Dr. Barnard, Melinia or Julie,  Latisse may be recommended for you.

Latisse is most effective when administered on a daily basis for 16 full weeks. To use Latisse, make sure your skin is clean, and carefully use the provided applicator to brush one drop of the liquid across the base of your upper eyelid. Then use a cotton ball or towel to absorb any excess fluid, and repeat this process with the other eye. Patients typically begin noticing changes after four to eight weeks of use, but the full benefits of Latisse usually become evident after 16 weeks of consistent treatment. At this point, talk to your cosmetic surgeon about the possibility of continued use.

What Happens After Using Latisse?

After four weeks of daily Latisse treatment, some patients may begin to notice additional eyelash growth and length. Eight weeks into treatment, most patients experience fuller and darker eyelash growth. At 12 weeks, eyelashes should be noticeably longer, fuller, and darker, and at 16 weeks of treatment, patients experience the most dramatic results. If treatment becomes interrupted, eyelashes may begin to thin and decrease in fullness, but this can be reversed with resumed applications of Latisse.

The most common side effect of using Latisse is an occasional irritation in which the eye becomes red and itchy. Some patients may also experience a slight darkening in iris color and in the skin of the upper eyelash.
