Botulinum toxin “BOTOX © Cosmetic” was approved by the FDA in 2002 and millions of people have been treated for the temporary reduction and correction of dynamic wrinkles (rhytids), such as frown lines, crow’s feet and smile lines. In ten minutes, a few tiny injections and a couple of days, patients experience noticeable improvement without a recovery period or downtime. BOTOX © is actually a purified protein and injected into the muscle for treatment in a nonsurgical manner.

The lines and wrinkles appear as a result of muscle movement. As the skin becomes less elastic over time, repeated muscle contraction can cause moderate to severe lines. BOTOX © works by blocking nerve impulses which then reduces the movement of those muscles. With less movement the skin surface gradually smoothes out and the moderate to severe frown lines begin to fade. Visible results can be seen in the first 24 hours after injection. Most patients will notice softening of wrinkles at day 4 to 6 but full onset of BOTOX © occurs two weeks after the initial injection is done. Injections will last up to four months and patients can be retreated at that time. Be sure to schedule your follow-up treatment in advance and it is always recommended to have all injections 4-6 weeks before any important events or special occasions.

BOTOX © is a safe procedure but does have some potential complications such as bruising, swelling, tenderness at the site of the injection or muscles weakness. These side effects generally occur within the first week and usually go away on their own.
